Both may originate in a relativistic accretion disk, but there is currently no direct evidence to physically link them. We propose 16-10 ksec ASCA monitoring observations coordinated with approved XTE and IUE observations to simultaneously measure the UV and X-ray continua, iron line and reflection tail. Monitoring the response of the putative reprocessing components to primary continuum variability will constrain the geometry and provide a key test of reprocessing models. Bright across the UV/X-ray band and strongly variable on moderate time scales, Mrk 509 is an ideal target for this key test, which is feasible only in the current AO when both ASCA and IUE are operating.
