DRAKE USRA AND LHEA MD USA 20771 GREENBELT GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER E-mail: DRAKE@LHEAVX.GSFC.NASA.GOV Tel: 301 286 6962 Fax: 301 286 1684 Medium: 4GBDAT Subject: STARS Title: A JOINT ASCA AND XTE OBSERVATION OF THE RS CVN BINARY HR 1099: DEFINING THE NATURE OF THE HARD X-RAY EMISSION Abstract: We have been awarded 40 ksec of XTE time to observe the hard X-ray spectrum of the prototypical RS CVn binary HR 1099. This will enable us to detect its X-ray spectrum up to 35 keV even in its quiescent state, and to even harder energies if it flares. We propose to obtain an ASCA observation simultaneously with this XTE observation, so that we can obtain a moderate spectral resolution spectrum of the .5-8 keV range to complement the low-resolution (but broad-band) XTE spectrum. This joint observation should enable us to accurately characterize the coronal components present in HR 1099, and to search for a proposed hard X-ray emission component.
