SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL 42110 PROFESSOR RICK EDELSON UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA USA 52242-1479 IOWA CITY 203 VAN ALLEN HALL E-mail: EDELSON@SPACLY.PHYSICS.UIOWA.EDU Tel: (319)335-1880 Fax: (319)335-1753 Medium: 4GBDAT Subject: AGN Title: BROAD BAND X-RAY SPECTRUM OF NARROW LINE SEYFERT 1 AKN 564 Abstract: Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies lie at the extreme of the Seyfert 1 pheonomenon, exhibiting rapid variability, distinctive soft X-ray spectral complexity and narrow optical/UV emission lines. The reason for this unique behavior has not been identified, quite possibly because no NLS1 has yet been observed in the hard X-rays. We propose a 50 ks ASCA observation of the bright NLS1 Akn 564, to be coordinated with an already approved XTE observation. This will give the only 0.4--30 keV spectrum of a NLS1, allowing measurement of the iron line and reflection component and modeling of the complex soft X-ray spectrum, for comparison with normal Seyfert 1s. These data will also allow comparison of hard and soft component variability and compactness.
