BOX 3818 E-mail: CLS7I@VIRGINIA.EDU Tel: 804-924-4903 Fax: 804-924-3104 Medium: 5GB8MM Subject: CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES AND SUPERCLUSTERS Title: MAPPING THE TEMPERATURE STRUCTURE OF ALMOST RELAXED CLUSTERS Abstract: We propose observations of 4 bright Coma-like clusters, A2065, A2255, A2420 and A1650, whose X-ray images suggest that they are in a non-fully relaxed dynamical state. We expect to see significant X-ray temperature variations in these clusters, as predicted by several recent numerical simulations and, in fact, observed by ASCA in some nearby clusters. We will also measure the temperature at large off-center distances, where a sharp temperature decline is observed by ASCA in several other clusters. The gas temperature structure is a clue for the models of cluster formation and has important cosmological implications. The proposed clusters have redshifts between 0.07-0.085, and are sufficiently bright and small to fit within the useful ASCA FOV to facilitate these measurements. Co-Is: 1 MAXIM MARKEVITCH U.
