SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL 42193 PROFESSOR JOSEPH PATRICK HENRY UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII HI USA 96822 HONOLULU SPALDING 253, 2540 MAILE WAY E-mail: HENRY@GALILEO.IFA.HAWAII.EDU Tel: 808-956-7598 Fax: 808-956-9590 Medium: 2GB8MM Subject: CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES AND SUPERCLUSTERS Title: X-RAY TEMPERATURES FOR A COMPLETE SAMPLE OF DISTANT CLUSTERS Abstract: We propose to begin the systematic study of the spctra of high redshift clusters of galaxies. Specifically, we will make the first determinations of the cluster temperature function at a redshift other than zero. This measurement will discriminate among various models of the evolution of the X-ray gas in clusters and will also determine the mass density fluctuation spectrum on cluster scales. This proposal requests observations of the last four clusters in our complete sample. Co-Is: 1 ISABELLA GIOIA INST.
