SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL 43013 DR JULIAN PAUL OSBORNE UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER LEICS UK LE1 7RH LEICESTER UNIVERSITY ROAD E-mail: JULO@STAR.LE.AC.UK Tel: (+44)-116-2523598 Fax: (+44)-116-2523311 Medium: 2GB8MM Subject: CATACLYSMIC VARIABLES Title: THE COMPLEX X-RAY SPECTRUM OF EF ERI Abstract: We propose a second ASCA observation of the X-ray bright polar, EF Eri, to be simultaneous with an already accepted XTE observation. The initial ASCA observation is insufficient for this purpose as the accretion geometry in these systems (and hence their X-ray emission) can change dramatically, and in fact the existing ASCA PV data show EF Eri in an unusual state, with a second dip in its phase-folded lightcurve. Simultaneous data are essential in order to build a reliable composite broad band spectrum, with unprecedented spectral coverage from 0.4-40 keV, enabling the continuum shape, reflection spectrum, complex continuum absorption and emission line properties to be studied in detail.
