SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL 43035 DR STEVEN W ALLEN UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE CAMBRIDGESHIRE UK CB3 OHA CAMBRDIGE MADINGLEY ROAD E-mail: SWA@AST.CAM.AC.UK Tel: 44 1223 330803 Fax: 44 1223 337523 Medium: 4GBDAT Subject: CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES AND SUPERCLUSTERS Title: AN ASCA STUDY OF TWO EXCEPTIONAL COOLING FLOWS Abstract: We propose ASCA observations of two exceptional cooling-flows. The first, Abell 1068 (z = 0.139) has been shown through extensive ROSAT PSPC, optical and IRAS studies, to be shrouded in dusty, cold, X-ray absorbing material. ASCA observations will permit a detailed investigation of the properties of the cooling flow, its host cluster, and the nature of the absorbing gas. Deep ROSAT HRI and ISO observations of Abell 1068 are also scheduled and will complement the ASCA analysis.
