Because of its low Galactic latitude it has been little studied at optical or X-ray wavelengths. In fact it is the only cluster of the brightest thirty that has yet to be observed with ASCA. Previous X-ray imaging observations of the 3C129.1 cluster did not allow the amount of cooling in the intra-cluster medium to be determined with satisfactory precision. Thanks to the cluster's X-ray brightness the ASCA observation proposed here will provide spectra of exceptional quality which will enable us to search spectrally for cooling components. The proposed observation will also allow us to measure the X-ray flux from the well-known twin-tailed radio source 3C129.
