  Title: CAPELLA: STRUCTURE AND ABUNDANCES

Abstract:
We propose to observe the bright binary system Capella with ASCA and EUVE
simultaneously, in order to determine the coronal temperature structure and
abundances. While the previously obtained ASCA spectrum has been difficult to fit
with any temperature model, including models derived from non-simultaneous EUVE
observations, the situation can be ameliorated by using a simultaneous EUVE spectrum
to determine the differential emission measure. Simultaneity is critical, as EUVE
observations have shown variability by factors of 3 to 4 in the emission measures
above ten million K. ASCA then provides a direct measurement of the relative Si, S,
and Fe abundances, in addition to constraints on the highest temperature
emission.Fits to the ASCA spectrum will provide other abundances as well.
