Title: QUASAR X-RAY SPECTRA AT Z

Abstract:
We propose to observe four bright (1~mCrab) radio-quiet quasars at z~1.5 with ASCA.
This redshift: (1) allows Fe-K features to be studied in quasars at a S/N comparable
with those in Seyfert 1 galaxies; (2) allows objects of high luminosity (~10
L(3C273)) to be compared with low luminosity AGN; (3) lies near the peak in quasar
evolution, at a look back time of ~50 -- 70 per cent of a Hubble time, and may
reveal changes in continuum form with evolutionary epoch. The ASCA spectra will also complement approved XTE observations.
